| Arno Uijlenhoet: Let’s start changing Europe now! |

| In June this year European Parliament elections will be held. As we face a dramatic financial and economical crisis, a world in peril and wars and conflicts around the globe, these elections are of great importance for the future of Europe.
|
But there’s something even more huge at stake: The democratic quality of European politics and therefore the authority of Europe in the world.
The point is that our national leaders in Europe neglect the fact that the support of the people is needed to change Europe in a legitimate way and to give Europe a credible and if necessary powerful voice in the world. Behind closed doors they’re building a political Europe without our involvement. The result of their behaviour is that we’re stuck with an uncontrollable, non transparent and unaccountable system which lacks more and more the authority which so barely needed in the changing world of today. Our leaders are in danger of creating a profound moral and institutional crisis, a crisis in our democracy. Therefore the time has come for the people in Europe to act together. If we, people of Europe, have the courage to do that, we can change Europe for the better!
In this respect we face an historical moment in time. For the first time in European history we are in a position to change the fate of our continent. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Europe has become one. In many respects European integration is now an accomplished fact. A single market and, for most member states, a common currency have arrived. But what remains uncertain is the political form the European Union will take. Our leaders lack the power and legitimacy to make the European Union ready to face the enormous challenges of today. Both the Constitutional Treaty and the Treaty of Lisbon where voted away. The Treaty of Lisbon won’t be ratified in any form before the coming European Parliament elections. It is therefore now up to us, people of Europe, to raise our voices and to organise ourselves in such a way that we become directly involved in the course of the European Union.
That’s why I ask you to support Newropeans as the first and only grassroots European political movement whose aim it is to open up Europe to you. Not to make the European Union a federal ‘super state’, but to invest in the position of the European parliament in such a way that we, the people of Europe, get back our grips on Europe and that the power Europe already has becomes accountable. Change in Europe should be organised in a transparent and controllable way within the European Parliament, not behind closed doors within the European Council or by bureaucrats and lobbyists connected to the European Commission. Only a mature European Parliament is in a position to control the mania for organisation of the Commission and to function as a democratic counterbalance tot the European Council and the Council of Ministers.
Use your European voice to stop our national politicians to go on with their endless and uncontrollable negotiations, leading to an ongoing enlargement and further political integration without your approval. Let’s regain our grips on Europe und fuel the credibility of Europe in the world, by raising our common European voice within the European Parliament. Let’s start changing Europe now!
